Write.

I am coming to see that the most precious, if carefully attended to, life-changing moments happen when we are weak. Attention to carefully attended to because when we are weak is when we are most vulnerable to the predator.

The predator comes in all shapes and sizes and after doing some personal work I am learning the manipulations of my own. They are very scary. Checkout an artwork piece that has allowed me to process one aspect.

The key ingredient to these “whens” are the “whats” we do about it.

This is when it is very hard - but alas, we choose our hard.

It was a ten year old Ali that felt super defeated after a sustained period of being ignored by her “friends” when she finally gave up. She had no idea what or where she went wrong. Why would a group of girls just start to purposefully leave her behind? What did she do and why were they laughing at her? I can remember this little girl full of life feeling crushed

This was Ali’s, “when.”

Finally, one day, Ali came home from school and went immediately to the corner of her room, grabbed a purple spiral notebook (god I wish I still had this but me throwing away 12 years of journals will be another post) and began writing; page after page, she wrote. Her inner world started making more sense. To make this more romantic, Ali ended up ditching the naysayers and found a new group of kids playing soccer (way more fun) and they weren’t wearing bras yet either.

A few months later, 9/11 happened; familiar feelings of confusion crept over her. Why is this happening; what did the people on the plane or in the buildings do so wrong to deserve this?

Nothing made sense. She went to the corner of her room and grabbed for the purple spiral; this time she wrote a song.

This was Ali’s, “what.”

Ali discovered writing in her vulnerable, weakened states. She did not know this at the time but this would become a gift that she would have the responsibilities of sharing with the world.
