Forgiving the Sailor

Writer's picture: Alexis RuschAlexis Rusch

I have always been drawn to the power of the sea; in particular when she thrashes.

When I close my eyes I can picture the sounds of the storm rolling in and the way the colors shift along with the slightest degree change in celsius. This building moment creates that ominous feeling throughout my nervous system; one of excitement, curiosity, and anticipation.

I would always dart into the ocean one last time before the first crack, all knowing that my father would not allow us anywhere near... any form of water thereafter. In fact, he was most likely getting the truck ready to take us to the nearest safety shelter. This was always the "golden opportunity." ;)

While everyone was running towards the campground... I was sprinting right into the Mosaic of Mother. Raindrops and low thunder seemed to corral all of her unique creatures to the shore line. I would hopscotch the jellyfish and thank them for not stinging me, but always understanding if they would. I figured they were only trying to include me in on their dance.

Grinning from temporal lobe to lobe, I would then pause at waistline to breathe in her pre-workout sweat and paddle back to land.

From an open window I would marvel at the lightning piercing through the sky, feel her salty sweat adhere to my own, and begin to smell the fresh carcasses of our beloved electrocuted r-selected ocean mates. (r-selected species produce many offspring, short lifespan think jellyfish/dandelion verse K-selected produce few offspring, long lifespan think whale/human)

Lighting striking her cannot feel good I would wonder.

Come to learn later on, when lightning does strike, she doesn't allow it to penetrate; rather, she will spread it out over the water turning it into a conductor. The ocean will take this energy and allow the flow of its magnitude to surface in more than one direction.

Brilliant.

She uses it to her advantage, most likely zapping off species that are overcrowding the systems and anything else literally superficial. All the while protecting what lies within.

When you get struck, how will you conduct its energy?
